How to Save with the Canada Greener Homes Grant

Buildings and homes across Canada contribute 18% of Canada’s national greenhouse gas emissions through gas and electricity consumption, or generally poor energy conservation. Not only does this impact our global environment, but it also costs property owners hundreds of dollars per year.

You can reduce your carbon footprint through several means, including adjusting your thermostat to reduce the difference in temperature from indoors to outdoors, switching halogen bulbs to LEDs, and washing clothes in cooler water temperatures. Additionally, upgrading windows and adding insulation can make a positive impact.

Thanks to the federal government, Canadians can now take advantage of the Canada Greener Homes Grant (Quebec, Nova Scotia) to receive up to $5,600 in eligible rebates.

Specifically, the Canada Greener Homes Grant offers rebates up to $125 per opening for ENERGY STAR certified windows, patio doors and hinged doors, and rebates up to $250 per opening for windows or patio doors that are ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certified. The initiative also extends to Smart Thermostats, professional air-sealing, resiliency measures, insulation, heating equipment and renewable energy.

Eligibility and Requirements

As part of the eligibility requirements, properties must be more than six months old, and homeowners must prove ownership and that the home is their primary residence. All eligible Canadians can register for the grant through the Canadian Government website. Please note that Quebec and Nova Scotia residents have separate registration websites.

After registering, a certified EnerGuide inspector is required to perform an EnerGuide evaluation on the property to identify areas that qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Grant. After reviewing the EnerGuide inspector’s list of eligible measures, homeowners must complete at least one identified energy-efficient retrofit with eligible products to receive the rebate.

After the EnerGuide evaluation has been completed and improvements have been made, homeowners can start the reimbursement process by submitting the required information online. Pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide inspections can also be reimbursed up to $600.
