Energy Star Most Efficient 2020 and Accreditation for Windows

2020 launched a new standard for the ENERGY STAR program – the biggest update in a decade. It includes updates to windows, doors and skylight standards for Canadian manufacturers, installers and home builders. While previously you had to choose your windows based on your climate zone, if it is energy star rated in 2020, it will help you save on energy bills no matter where you live. Take a look at the new ENERGY STAR requirements for 2020!

About the Energy Star Program

The ENERGY STAR program is a North American based program with the goal of helping people save money for their effort to protect the environment. The ENERGY STAR symbol labels products to help consumers make responsible, eco-conscious decisions for their homes to ensure a better environment and a more sustainable future.

The program rewards manufacturers that meet or exceed energy efficiency standards set by Natural Resources Canada. Natural Resources Canada measures the energy efficiency of doors and windows using certain metrics and periodically updates the standards on what is considered energy efficient. Through a mix of industry improvements, technology advancements and manufacturing changes, the ENERGY STAR program adjusts its requirements for a product to be deemed energy efficient.

In order to have an ENERGY STAR window rating, the window must protect you from harsh elements, and keep you warm during winter and cool during summer. For the 2020 change, Natural Resources Canada adjusted the Energy Rating and U-Factor for private windows. For windows to be considered ENERGY STAR, they must meet or surpass a 1.22 whenever estimated in Kelvin or 0.21 when estimated in Fahrenheit. Due to the new 2020 standard, over 80% of windows on the market don’t make the cut to meet the new certification.
