Easy Fall Decor to Get you Ready for the Season

From warm colour palettes and comfy sweaters to pumpkin spice and apple picking, it’s easy to understand why fall is a favourite season for many Canadians. As the leaves change colour, it’s time to get your home ready for fall with these easy decorating ideas that will help create an inviting autumn-inspired entrance and living areas of your home.

Hand-painted Signs

Decorative hand-written signs make a beautiful statement, especially when placed at your front entrance alongside other fall decor listed below. Buying a festive hand-painted sign will usually set you back $20 or more, so save money and create your own! Purchase a piece of timber in the length and width you want and paint it white. Use black paint to free-hand, or use a stencil, to create your desired fall-inspired design. Use yellows, oranges and reds to add festive colours and add icons such as pumpkins or leaves.

Preserved Pumpkins

Nothing says fall like a range of different-sized pumpkins and gourds on the front porch. Prevent these signature items from rotting and attracting animals by preserving them. Coat your pumpkins with floor cleaner or soak them in a bleach bath solution to keep them looking their best all season. Note: Don’t preserve pumpkins if you intend to compost them or donate them to a farm at the end of the season. If that’s your plan, replace with fresh pumpkins every few weeks, depending on the weather. When pumpkins are no longer used, freeze them until it’s time to donate.

Front Porch Planters

When getting in the spirit of the fall season, one of the easiest things you can do is purchase a front porch planter. These are easily accessible at most garden centres or grocery or hardware stores. Go for classic orange, cream and green hues for a fall colour palette. Alternatively, create your own front porch planter by hollowing out a pumpkin and filling it with flowers or succulents, or create an edible fall planter using various kales, cabbage and other fall blooms

Decorative Wreath

Wreaths are not only a Christmas staple; a fall-inspired wreath can be the finishing touch to your front entrance, offering a welcoming vibe. Although you can buy decorative fall wreaths, you can also make one yourself. Visit your local craft store to purchase a circular frame. Then, use a glue gun to adhere a decorative mixture of leaves and acorns. You can also collect fallen sticks, long pampas or other ornamental grass to use for a more natural look.

Fall Centrepiece

Get ready to sit down for Thanksgiving dinner with a stunning fall centrepiece that will become the highlight of the dining table. Arrange mini pumpkins, acorns, leaves and even branches in a large wooden bowl, on top of a wooden plank, or in large mason jars. Take it to the next level by adding battery-operated string lights, tealights or a mixture of white candles at different heights.

Festive Mantelpiece

Draw attention to the fireplace by showing off your best decorations on the mantelpiece. Display a selection of fall decorations such as small pumpkins, dried leaves, a garland and candles. Create small signs with festive sayings, and add lights to create a warm ambiance.

Candles

When it comes to candles, a limit doesn’t exist. As the weather cools down, candles add warmth and ambiance to any area of the house. Add a candle-lit lantern to your front porch next to your preserved pumpkins and planters. The mixture of heights and colours will complement each other beautifully. Fall-scented candles will fill the air with pumpkin, cinnamon, and apple aromas when you and your guests walk inside, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
