Here are 4 key steps to clean your windows like a pro.

Step 1: Knock Dirt Loose with a Strip Applicator or Sponge

Create your own window cleaning solution with a bucket of warm water and a squirt of dishwashing liquid. You’ll want as little suds as possible, so don’t go crazy with the dishwashing liquid. If you have picture windows (single pane), take a strip applicator and scrub the window thoroughly, removing stubborn dirt and stains. If you have multi-pane windows, use a handheld natural sponge.

Step 2: Use Squeegee to Wipe Clean

Take a squeegee to the soapy window to remove the cleaning solution. For picture windows, start at the top left corner and snake your way down the window making sure to go right to the edges. For multi-pane windows, move the squeegee from left to right, then top to bottom on each pane. Periodically wipe the squeegee’s blade using a clean, lint-free rag to remove any residue.

Step 3: Wipe the Edges with a Micro-Fibre Cloth

There will almost always be remaining water on the edges of the glass. Use a dry micro-fibre cloth to get rid of water marks on the window. Then use a towel to wipe up any water on the windowsill or floor. It’s important to dry the windowsill and window frame to prevent erosion and paint removal.

Step 4: Remove Hard Spots on Windows

Stubborn mineral stains can build up on your windows due to hard-water runoff from masonry or rain falling through metal window screens. A regular cleaning won’t be able to remove these spots, so you need to go one step further. After cleaning the windows, use a hard surface cleanser that contains oxalic acid. Mix the powder into a paste on a wet towel and rub away the stains. Then rinse and squeegee the glass to remove residue.
