Answer:

To give the home a new look, I would add in some lighter colours. For the siding, windows and the garage door I would suggest you go with Gentek’s Wicker in their Sequoia Select vinyl siding.  Vinyl siding gives you the maintenance free material you desire as well as the colours that will look good on your home.  As for the front door, maybe try something bold like Gentek’s Iron Ore or even black to create a focal point.

Up dated siding on 50 year old home

Question

Kerry Ann asks:

I purchased this 50 year home and would like to update the siding. It is 36\’ X 28\’ and is very plain looking. It is located in an area where most of the houses are about the same age, same size and similar finishing. I was told that it would not make a big difference in the value of the home if I were to expensive siding (Goodfellow or Canexel). I was told vinyl would be the best choice, especially since it requires less care than wood. I looked at the 4 options you have on your website (Driftwood, Concord, Fair Oaks and Sequoia) and was wondering what you think the best option would be for me. I will be adding 2\” of styrofoam insulation. I like the colour Maize and thought that the Double 4\” would be suitable. Someone suggested to go with white corners and soffit, etc. What do you suggest?

Kerry Ann 1 Kerry Ann 2 Kerry Ann 3Answer:

Sequoia Select is Gentek’s top line of vinyl. It’s greater thickness lets it sit on the wall better and look cleaner.  Vinyl siding is the low maintenance option for your home for years to come.  As for matching to Maize, white would give you a traditional look but if you went with something like Almond or Monterey Sand for your soffit, fascia and eaves, you would get a more modern look.

Choosing siding and trim colours

Question:

Tracy asks:

We recently purchased this home and have added a sun-room addition on the end of the house above the garage. Now we are in the process of updating and unifying the front facade along with the newly renovated side of the house as everything appears very disconnected from one another. All the windows are being updated with white vinyl/no grids. All entry doors are also to be replaced along with having a proper garage door installed. We would prefer the man door and garage door colour blend away. It is difficult to tell in pictures but the roof colour is driftwood. The main field of the brick is extremely similar to your Sandalwood Sable and the mortar joint is more of a reddish brown. Currently the eaves trough and fascia is brown but could be changed. The soffit is white. Any and all recommendation to help with choosing siding and trim colours, styles, etc. for this project would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Tracy.

*Update* I recently sent other pictures of our home however this picture perhaps shows a bit more detail of the house. We are likely going to remove the brick from the front of the house and replace it with possibly some sort of stone product so we are not tied in to trying to match it. The new addition steps back approx. 4 inches from the existing front of the house so there is a corner at that point on the house. One of the colours that we had been considering was Gentek Windswept smoke but are unsure of how to trim it out and what colour etc would be appropriate. Thank you again, Tracy

Tracy

Answer:

Windswept Smoke gives you a lot of options for this house.  Whatever stone you use to replace the brick, will more than likely have both brown and grey tones to it.  Windswept Smoke is a mix of grey and brown so it will blend well with the stone.  For a soffit, fascia and trim colour, I would go with Gentek’s Dark Drift or Pebble, if you would like something lighter.  It would also depend on the tones in your stone. Either of them would work. As for the type of siding, Gentek’s Sequoia Select siding would look great in this situation but you could also go with our Sierra Steel, line of steel siding, if you are looking for a higher end look. If you were considering this material, you could chose Iron Ore and trim and still trim it out with Dark Drift or Pebble.  Both options will give you a maintenance free modern looking home for years to come.
